Mary “Minnie” Killmar was born on October 11, 1865 in Almont, Michigan to Nathan Killmar and Aurilla (Morry) Killmar. The family resided in Almont during her early years and moved to Marlette, Sanilac, Michigan during her teen years.
At some point, the Killmars homesteaded in Brown County, South Dakota near the Elm River north of Aberdeen, where Mary met her future husband Nathan Johnson. They married in 1882. She and Nathan had five children: Frank D. (b. August 1886), Ralph Gordon (b. June 3, 1889), Millie (b. November 1890), Alice Edna (b. April 1896), and Clifford D. (b. ci. 1904).
