Charles “Charlie” Carl Daly was born October 9, 1886 in Columiba, Brown, South Dakota to John Charles Daly and Mary Jane “Minnie” (Sullivan) Daly. He was married to Edith May Jones in Aberdeen, Brown, South Dakota on September 22, 1910 at the age of 23. The couple lived at Daly Corner, on Charles’s father’s farm in Columbia, Brown, South Dakota. They had five children: Kathleen (b. July 8, 1911), John C. (b. ci. 1914), Earl F. (b. ci. 1915), Arthur J “Artie” (b. ci. 1916), and Donald A. (b. ci. 1918).
On February 19, 1919, Edith suffered a terrible bout of influenza and pneumonia. Everything was done to save her life that could be accomplished by the doctors present, but she passed away on February 24. Charles was left a widower at age 33, and his five young children suffered the loss of their sweet mother unfathomably.
Charles eventually remarried–he was married to Agnes May Cogley on August 12, 1935 in Westport, Brown, South Dakota. Charles’s granddaughter Janice (Spencer) Johnson remembers him as “a nice, hard-working farmer” who lived his whole life at Daly Corners.
