Angus Duncan Lankford Whitney (“Lankford”) was born on March 1, 1878 in Ardtrea, Simcoe Co., Ontario to Henry William Whitney and Matilda Ann (Carter) Whitney. He emigrated to America in 1897, at the age of 19. He was married to Julia Halverson Tyge in May of 1905 in Minot, Ward, North Dakota. She moved to North Dakota from New York, where she had been recently widowed and left with a young son, Joe. Lankford and Julia had three children: Joseph Hasketh (b. May 21, 1903)—from Julia’s previous marriage, Leonard Henry (b. ci. 1906), and Julia Mathilda (b. December 12, 1908).
The family farm was near Grandin, North Dakota. Lankford and Julia each homesteaded a quarter of land–they had a half section of land near Grandin. The family lost the farm eventually, and moved on to Minot, North Dakota. Lankford was dying of throat cancer by 1931, but he survived long enough to see the birth of his first grandson, Hugo Carlson. Lankford passed away October 19, 1931 in Minot. He was buried at Rosehill Memorial Park in Minot, Ward County, North Dakota.
